A big thanks goes out to Michael C. Neel for teaching us how to build a video game! Who cool was it to make your own game. Mike shared a lot of cool info with us on how to make video games. The resources he mentioned are below.
The Knoxville Game Design meetup group info is at http://www.knoxgamedesign.org/. For the parents, signing up for the email newsletter is the best way to stay up to date with the group and know when the next meeting is. We do not have any age limits and let the parents decide if their child is mature enough to attend. There will need to be a parent present with the child during the meeting.
Other links and sites:
http://xbox.create.msdn.com - this has everything to get started with xbox programming. This is a bit advanced though, so I recommend starting out children with either:
http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/studio - GameMaker
http://gamesalad.com/ - GameSalad
Both of these are drag-and-drop tools to build games with and have room to go deeper when the child ready.
http://scratch.mit.edu/ - Scratch is a very popular programming tool for kids, and has easy methods to upload and share their creations. We will probably do more formal Scratch groups next year at the TechCo (http://techco.org/) the organization that supports the game group and many other programs.

PMI helped us build a bridge and instill in the boys a love for knots and to value the places a length of rope can take them. They donated 630 feet of rope to help enabling us to bulid a monkey bridge and create lenghts of rope for the boys to learn to tie knots. Their generious donation, valued at $675.00, was put to use at this summers Webelos Resident Camp and will be use often going forarward.
You can see the boys in our thank you picture posted on PMI Website at: http://www.pmirope.com/news/field-report/
